PONTLLYFNI CIRCULAR

A circular walk from The Woollen Mill

If you fancy staying local, this circular walk from The Woollen Mill offers plenty to please. There’s much to enjoy including the wonderful wildflowers which lend splashes of colour to the lanes. You will find something special around every corner including fabulous views of Snowdon and the North Wales coast. You will find the route easy to navigate and most of the walk is on country lanes.  Watch out for the Alpacas and enjoy the peace!

Duration: 60 – 90 minutes/4 miles

Terrain: Country lanes and fields

Clynnog Road

Starting Out

Start your walk by crossing the river via the footbridge adjacent to The Woollen Mill. Continue straight on until you reach the metal gate and then enter the field. Turn right and cross the field. Pass through the kissing gate at the end and turn left onto the lane. Once you have climbed the hill, there are fantastic views of Snowdon. Follow the lane until you reach the cattle grid.  Step over the grid or pass through the gate to the left. After a few yards, turn into the lane on the right.

This lane initially heads upwards, but not steeply, and then levels off. Keep your eyes peeled for the wildflowers, birds and butterflies. There are fabulous views across the countryside and once you have reached the high point of the lane, those views extend all the way to the sea. The lane eventually begins to descend. Watch out for Alpacas grazing in a field to your right.

Pont y Cim

Pont y Cim

Follow the lane for roughly two miles and until you reach the turning for Pontllyfni which is clearly signposted. Turn right towards the village and continue walking until you reach the point where the lane bears right past a stone cottage. The road to the village is to your left, if you feel like a brief diversion. Otherwise, keep right and walk to the stone bridge – Pont y Cim. The bridge was built in 1612 at the expense of Catherine Buckley and in memory of her fiance who was drowned crossing the river here.  It cost £20 to complete. Pont y Cim is open to traffic, but as it is just 1.9m wide, it’s a tight squeeze for all but the smallest vehicles. Cross the bridge and then take the first lane to your right.

Clynnog Road

You are now on Clynnog Road and heading back towards The Woollen Mill. The lane wends its way up hill for a short distance but the climb isn’t arduous. Gorgeous hedgerows rise up on both sides as you climb away from the river. As the lane levels off, you are surrounded by open fields. To your left, there are views of the sea and Anglesey beyond. On a clear day, you can pick out the lighthouse at Llanddwyn.

Continue along the lane, past the cottages and back to The Woollen Mill. Snowdon rises up in the distance and you can hear the river flowing through the valley to your right. Look out for Buzzards circling above you and a variety of birds appearing from the hedgerows.
