Country house with a stunning location

The ancestral home of the Marquess of Anglesey and originally called Llwyn y Moel, Plas Newydd is country house on the banks of the Menai Strait. Situated near Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (Llanfairr P. G.) on the island of Anglesey, the house boasts a stunning setting affording wonderful views of Snowdonia. Grade I listed, the landscape features 40 acres of garden and 129 acres of woodland and parkland. The dining room of the house  boasts a wall adorned with Rex Whistler’s largest painting which measures 17.7 metres in length. There’s plenty to see in the grounds including an arboretum, Monterey Cypress trees, an Italianate terrace and a rhododendron garden.

It has to be said that the interior of Plas Newydd is less than spectacular and a little tired. However, it is worth taking the time to visit the rooms that are open to the public in order to view the Whistler mural and the office of the 7th Marquess of Anglesey which, at his request, has been left untouched since his death in 2013. The woodland and gardens are certainly worth exploring and if you walk around the grounds, you will discover gorgeous woodland, a nine-hole Frisbee golf course, an adventure playground and a wildflower meadow.

If exploring Plas Newydd leaves you feeling hungry or at least in need of refreshment, visit the pleasant Old Dairy Café at the entrance where you will also find a gift shop. In addition, you can grab an ice cream, a drink or a snack at the kiosk located in the courtyard behind the house where there are also toilets.

Plas Newydd is open daily and is owned by the National Trust. The car park is a decent size but can fill up at peak times. The Old Dairy Café opens at 10am, the grounds at 10.30 am and the house at 11am.
