Snowdon from Llyn Llewlyn

BEDDGELERT FOREST

Circular woodland walk with views of Snowdon

There’s plenty to see on this circular walk through ancient woodland near Beddgelert. Mountain streams run alongside the path as you wander through the trees and you eventually arrive at Llyn Llywelyn, a stunning lake with a mountain backdrop. There are amazing views of Snowdon from the far side of the lake which shouldn’t be missed.

This is a 4.4km walk on woodland paths and unmade roads. It is an undemanding hike with no steep ascents or hazardous areas. Much of the route is also used by cyclists, so care should be taken if you are walking with dogs. The Welsh Highland Railway traverses the forest and you have to cross the track at two points along the way. There are no gates at the second crossing, making it advisable to put dogs on leads before approaching the track.

From the car park to the lake

The walk begins at the parking area where there is route map clearly displayed. The circular walking route is clearly identified by red markers along the way. Follow the path up into the woods and then cross the railway track. Small streams tumble down the hillside next to the path which eventually leads you to a more open area with pleasing views.

Keep following the red markers and you will eventually arrive at the wonderful Llyn LLewlyn, a beautiful lake affording magnificent views of the peaks beyond. There’s a picnic table by the lake where you can enjoy lunch or a snack before continuing your hike. This is a great place for kids and dogs to paddle and if you visit on a quiet day, you will marvel that you have found such incredible serenity so close to civilisation

Views of Snowdon

After enjoying a paddle or a picnic on the shore of Llyn Llewlyn, follow the path to the far side of the lake. This is a short diversion from the marked route but it is easy to retrace your steps. You will be rewarded with amazing views across the lake to Snowdon. You may never see a finer view of the mountain!

When you have admired the views and taken your photographs, walk back to the bottom of the lake and pick up the trail again. This will take you down through woodland and past mountain streams towards the car park. You will have to cross the railway track again and there are no gates to prevent children or dogs from running across. When you see the crossing in the distance, get you leads out and grab the kids!

Returning to the car park

The route takes you back to the car park via the access road.  Take care as you reach the junction with this road as there may be cars entering the parking area. Don’t forget to soak in the views of the mountains towards the end of the walk. You will also pass by a pretty river with a small waterfall and an attractive log cabin in the woods.

This is a fabulous walk throughout the year and ideal if you only have half a day in the area. It won’t tire you out too much and you will love every minute of it! There are no toilets or refreshments at Beddgelert Forest but the village is only two minutes down the road if you need to eat.
